Wu Ying, a 31-year-old woman on death row for fraud charges, now got the hope to fulfill her big wish in life – to be a normal person living an ordinary life. On Friday, China’s Supreme Court overturned the death penalty imposed on her. Three years ago, she was given the capital punishment for raising funds privately, an illegal activity in China.
The sentencing of the woman, once regarded as the sixth richest woman in China, has aroused enormous public outcry and sympathy as people believed that she doesn’t deserve to die for such a non-violent crime and a very common practice in Zhejiang, where she came from. Maybe this is a small victory of the power of the people.
At the same time, private bank reforms have been hotly discussed in Zhejiang.
