As a social commentator, I am frequently invited to meet to meet visiting politicians. Last night, I had the pleasure of meeting Jonathan Powell, who served as the Downing Street Chief of Staff under Tony Blair’s government. He was also the chief British negotiator on Northern Ireland. He subsequently wrote a book on Northern Ireland peace talks. Running a charity dealing with conflicts, he is still an influential figure in British and world politics.
I rather enjoy such meetings. It’s always rewarding to share what I know about China. And personally, I find it quite fascinating to observe such characters and to see how they get where they are.
